John Henry Newman (London 1801-Edgbaston 1890) was an Anglican priest. After converting to Catholicism, he became a priest and then a cardinal. He was one of the leading figures in the Oxford Movement, which began at Oxford University in 1833 and sought to link the Anglican Church more closely to the Roman Catholic Church. He founded the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri in Edgbaston, England.
Beatified in 2010 in Birmingham by Pope Benedict XVI, he has since been canonised by Pope Francis on 13 October 2019.
