The icon shows the cross in the centre, St Helen in her royal dress on the left and Emperor Constantine on the right, both crowned. Legend has it that after the battle of Ponte Milvio and the mystical vision that ended the persecution of the Christians, Constantine decided to send his mother Helena to Jerusalem to search for the Cross of the Crucifixion. Helen was able to find the three different crosses used on the day of Christ's death. St Helen divided the cross into several parts, the main one of which was left in Jerusalem.
