John 19:25-27 "By the Cross of Jesus stood his Mother...
The composition
In the Crucifixion you have Jesus on the Cross, and standing at the foot of the Cross, Mary 'Stabat'. Mary lives the mystery of the cross with her Son. Mary and Jesus are crucified together because a mother always wants to be in the place of her suffering son, and she suffers terribly. The Crucified One is never alone; it is always Jesus and Mary together. We can add Jesus and us together, because we all pass through the crucifixion of Christ; whether we like it or not, whether we are believers or not, the cross runs through all our existence. Just as I showed Jesus and Mary in the crucifixion, I also wanted to show them in glory. The Centenary Icon should be read in conjunction with the Crucifixion Icon. Suffering is the passage to glory, not Christ's last word. The Cross is never an end, the Cross is the great passage, the Passover: the last word of Christ is the glorious Cross, the true face of the Crucified One, one cannot go without the other: there is always the Cross and the glory.
