This Icon may seem very simple: a meeting, a hug, a gesture of affection. And yet this meeting (this kiss) says a lot.
Peter, chosen by Jesus to found his Church.
Paul, chosen on the road to Damascus to “be for the pagans, a minister of Christ Jesus”
Two beings chosen to found the Church, two beings so different and it is this difference that will make and still makes all the richness of the Church. Provided that we know how to welcome each other with love. This Icon makes us aware that our differences are not there to oppose us, but to enrich us, complete us, enlarge us, so that we welcome each other with love as shown by this icon.
It is not always easy, it takes renunciation, going beyond to recognize the richness of the other. This renunciation is expressed by the color of their clothes: coats in yellow ocher and brown ocher, color of the earth, color of the desert, symbol of asceticism.
There must also be faith in God expressed by the blue of the tunics. Blue is the color of wisdom, the color from above: the sky. Wisdom is the gift of tasting God. So blue expresses prayer, contemplation, union, faith.
Unity is never uniformity.
In front of this Icon, ask God for the grace to welcome one another. Everyone carries a wealth, knowing how to give, but also knowing how to receive.
