Icon created for the 1st synod of the Italian army
A centurion approaches Jesus and asks him to heal his servant. If a Roman centurion asks Jesus, a Jew, for help, it is because love already dwells in his heart. St Luke tells us that this centurion loved his servant very much. And the disciples insist: "He is good to us". But the centurion's faith exceeded all expectations: "Say just one word".
The centurion's raised hand expresses his Faith, his total trust, and it is this what guides Christ's saving action. This is well expressed in the composition.
Weapons, missiles and rockets move very fast, but stronger and faster is the power of Love. God is Love. His servant was healed instantly. This is the scene we see at the top of the icon.
