David (circa 1000 BC) was undoubtedly the greatest king in the history of the Jewish people. He united the Northern Kingdom (Israel) and the Southern Kingdom (Judah), and was also a talented writer and musician. Many of the psalms are attributed to him. His life is recounted in several books of the Bible: the First and Second Books of Samuel, the First Book of Kings.
On the death of King Saul, who was killed in battle, David was first established as king of the tribe of Judah. In the north reigned a son of Saul who was assassinated by his own generals. David then became king over all the people of Israel. He made Jerusalem the capital of his kingdom and installed the Ark of the Covenant there, marking the place of God's presence.
