Mariam Baouardy (1846-1878), religious name Sister Marie of Jesus Crucified, Carmelite nun, born in Abellin, Upper Galilee, entered the Carmelite convent in Pau in 1867. She founded a Carmelite convent in Mangalore, India, and the Carmelite convent of Bethlehem in 1875. She was beatified on 13 November 1983 by Pope John Paul II and canonised on 17 May 2015 by Pope Francis.
