This saint is wrongly called Saint Bernard of Menthon following a Life composed in the 15th century by Richard de la Valdisère, who made him a character of the noble family of Menthon. Today he is called Saint Bernard of the Alps or Saint Bernard of Aosta. Born around the year 1000, he died in Novara (Italy) on June 15, 1081. A priest of Aosta, he travelled through the mountain parishes and took care of travellers and pilgrims, for whom he founded two hospices on the passes that bear his name: the Grand and Petit Saint-Bernard. Canonized in 1681, Saint Bernard became famous with the development of mountaineering and skiing.
