Christopher of Lycia is considered the patron saint of travellers. Legend has it that he was the ferryman for a child on the edge of a raging torrent. The child became so heavy that Christopher discovered it was Jesus, the one who created the world.
The etymology of his name reflects this sacred dimension: the word derives from the Greek words Khristos (Christ) and phorein (to carry).
A martyr, his cult is attested as early as the 5th century, in Bithynia.
