The archangel Gabriel is God's messenger. In the Old Testament, the archangel appears to the prophet Daniel, announcing to him the precise time of the coming of the Messiah (Daniel 9:20-27). He was also sent to the priest Zechariah, to tell him that his prayers had been heard (Luke 1:5-25). Six months later, the archangel was sent by God to Nazareth. Gabriel is the angel of the Annunciation, announcing to Mary that she has been chosen to be the mother of the Saviour (Luke 1:26-38). He is celebrated, along with the other archangels Michael and Raphael, on 29 September.
