Michael means "who is like God" in Hebrew. In the Bible, he is mentioned as the chief of the archangels (Dan 10:21; 12:1). He is the supreme archangel, represented as the leader of the heavenly armies and is the defender of the Church. He defeats Satan during the war of the angels at the time of the Apocalypse (Rev 12:7-8), and he also helps Jesus to judge souls at the Last Judgement. He is celebrated, along with the other archangels Gabriel and Raphael, on 29 September.
