Saint Thomas, known as Didymus (the Twin), was one of a small group of disciples chosen by Jesus in the early days of his public life to become his apostles. In addition to the well-known episode of his unbelief (see icons 51 and 241, John 20:24-31), he is credited with the evangelisation of the Middle East. From the year 37, he founded churches in the north of Persia and in Pakistan. Between 42 and 49, he travelled the roads teaching the Good News. Thomas is said to have evangelised southern India, where he is considered the founder of the Indian Church. According to legend, he was martyred in India in 72 by being speared in the back. His tomb is said to be in the Basilica of St Thomas in Chennai, India.
