Saint Timothy, brought up in piety by his pious mother, applied himself early to the study of Sacred Scripture. The praise given about him to St. Paul, who came to preach in Lycaonia in the year 51, led the apostle to choose him as a companion in his apostolic work. Timothy accompanied St. Paul on most of his journeys in Asia and to Rome. After various journeys, St. Paul ordained him a bishop and assigned him to the church at Ephesus. Timothy, having tried to dissuade people from honoring a deity on the occasion of a pagan feast, was killed as a martyr with stones around the year 97.
