Martyr supplicated in Rome around 137 under Trajan. Sophie, wife of Filandre, gave birth to three daughters: Vera, Nadezda and Liubov. Over the centuries, the three young girls have been associated with the three theological virtues of faith, hope and charity. As a widow, Sophie dedicated her life to helping and assisting Christian prisoners. Trajan summoned her, the legends say, and asked her to renounce her Christian faith. But Sophie refused and was subjected to torture along with her three daughters. Despite the suffering, the girls did not recant, and the only thing left for the executioners to do was to behead them. Sophie gives them a burial outside the city. Three days later, the mother collapses on the grave of her daughters and dies.
