Our Lady of Vladimir is one of the most famous icons, having produced numerous miracles, according to legend. Historical documents mention its arrival in Kiev from Constantinople in 1131. It was then placed in the Mejihirsky monastery in Vichgorod, a town around twenty kilometres from Kiev. In 1155, Prince Andrei Bogolioubski took the icon to Vladimir.

It was from here that the icon acquired exceptional status in Russia. Regarded as the protector of the Orthodox Church and the State, it is the object of veneration. Many miracles have been attributed to it. Prince Bogolioubski had Vladimir's Dormition Cathedral built to house it.
In 1395, the Tartars invaded Russia. The icon was then transferred to Moscow. Against all odds, the Tatar armies retreated before reaching Moscow. According to legend, it was the icon of Our Lady of Vladimir that performed this miracle. The icon was then placed in the Cathedral of the Dormition in the Kremlin, where it remained until 1918. It is now kept in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.
